PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for providing landscape maintenance, permit review and inspection and the investigation of complaints relative to landscaping issues within rights of way.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade in the performance of routine tasks; receives closer supervision when performing more advanced tasks.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs a limited range of related duties in investigating complaints and recommending remedial action;
  • Identifies existing vegetation and makes recommendations for salvage and/or preservation;
  • Performs site inspections of plant materials, supplies and contract execution to insure conformance to plans and specifications;
  • Conducts tree surveys to determine the condition of the trees and makes appropriate recommendations for pruning, planting and tree removal;
  • Maintains records of materials;
  • Advises district personnel and engineers in the interpretation of landscape plans and specifications;
  • May prepare plans for small design projects;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • principles and practices of landscape architecture;
    • soils, horticulture, planting, seeding and landscape materials;
  • Skills
    • drafting and calculating equipment skills;
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • apply basic landscape architectural principles and practices in planning and design of landscape projects;
    • keep records and make reports;
    • prepare and interpret specifications;
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in landscape architectural design, horticulture, plant science or forestry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in landscape architectural design, horticulture, plant science or forestry may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
