PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the design, inspection, implementation, and maintenance of landscape development projects.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of a Transportation Landscape Designer 3 or an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead Landscape Designers of lower grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Gathers and calculates field data for the preparation of roadside development plans, specifications, and cost estimates, including collecting landscape material samples for testing;
- Designs plantings for new construction and directs their installation;
- Locates and plots natural features, including identification of existing vegetation, and recommends salvage and/or preservation;
- Reviews plans for turf establishment, seeding, fertilizing, or sodding;
- Conducts site inspections of plant materials, supplies, and contract execution to insure conformance with plans and specifications;
- Consults with and advises department personnel on roadside landscape development and maintenance matters;
- Maintains plant material cost and availability records;
- Provides advice regarding herbicide and insecticide use;
- Completes drafting assignments pertaining to final design plans;
- Meets with outside officials to discuss projects;
- May investigate complaints relative to landscaping and makes recommendations;
- May work on special design projects;
- Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in landscape architectural design, horticulture, plant science, or forestry.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in landscape architectural design, horticulture, plant science, or forestry may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications including a Commercial Operator Certificate for the use of pesticides issued by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
