PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation this class is accountable for supervising the work of crews engaged in sign shop operations or maintenance.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a Transportation General Supervisor, Transportation Maintenance Manager or other employee of higher grade; may work under the functional supervision of another Transportation Supervisor.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises Transportation Maintenance Crew Leaders and Transportation Maintainers; may exercise functional supervision over other Transportation Supervisors.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Supervises sign shop crew engaged in manufacturing of traffic signs, traffic control devices (regulatory, warning, guide, construction and maintenance signs), channelizing devices, vehicle decals and miscellaneous signs; 
  • Supervises manufacturing of signs using silk screening, aluminum preparation and cutting, adhering reflective and non-reflective sheeting and carpentry; 
  • Orders materials, maintains inventory, trains new employees and plans daily work assignments; 
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans crews work; 
  • Establishes and maintains crew procedures; 
  • Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; 
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Monitors use of equipment, materials, supplies and contractual services; 
  • Maintains cost records; 
  • Maintains necessary precautions for safety of employees and the public; 
  • Supervises snow and ice work; 
  • Requisitions supplies and materials; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • standard practices, supplies, materials, methods, tools and equipment used in manufacturing all types of road signs and traffic control devices; 
    • relevant agency policies and procedures; 
    • relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations; 
    • safety precautions; 
    • winter road maintenance; 
  • Knowledge of
    • first aid; 
    • personnel rules;

    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • lay out signs from blueprints and sketches;
    • draw blueprints when required;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in the sign shop field.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 4.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class will be required to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory, acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to extremes of weather conditions, frequent lifting of heavy weights, highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months and loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
