PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for supervising the operation and maintenance of a large automated state fish hatchery.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives general direction from an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises Environmental Protection Fish Hatchery Supervisors 1, Maintainers, seasonal workers, and other employees of lower grade.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of the staff and operations of a large pumped-water hatchery; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans hatchery work; establishes and maintains hatchery procedures; develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; keeps time, materials, growth, feeding and other records; supervises such work as checking temperatures, taking spawn, preparing eggs for incubation, incubation of eggs, treatment of eggs, preparation of food, feeding of fry, fingerlings, adult fish and brood stock; supervises handling of brood stock, lighting and temperatures for early egg production, and sorting, collecting and preparing of fish for distribution; keeps records of individual well production, well temperatures and water chemistry; supervises the maintenance of large pumps, automatic feeding equipment, generators, other hatchery equipment, grounds, buildings and rearing pools; supervises operation of public fish ponds; purchases materials; runs precise feeding experiments to determine the efficiency and cost of various foods and feeding programs; prescribes treatment for parasites or diseases; conducts visiting groups through the hatchery complex; supervises research in feeding, diets, disease, parasite control and genetics; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures; considerable knowledge of relevant State and Federal laws, statutes and regulations; considerable knowledge of approved methods and techniques of modern fish culture; knowledge of diseases of fish and their treatment; knowledge of plumbing, pumps, generators, painting and carpentry; considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; considerable ability to maintain records; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Six (6) years of experience in the care and propagation of fish.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a supervisory capacity in the care and propogation of fish.
Note: For State Employees this is interpreted at or above the level of Environmental Protection Fish Hatchery Supervisor 1.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in fishery science may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required to live on site.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class must have have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able ability to perform the duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some danger of injury or physical harm from environmental conditions and to a moderate degree of discomfort from year-round weather conditions.
COMPENSATION GUIDELINES
1. The classification of Environmental Protection Fish Hatchery Supervisor 2 is assigned to Salary Group LS 25a.
2. Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to the maximum salary of Salary Group LS 26.
3. The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan IE in CORE-CT.
