PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Workers' Compensation Commission, Office of the Chairperson this class is accountable for supervising the staff and operations of the Office of the Compensation Review Board and acts for the Chairperson in his/her absence.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives executive and legal direction from the chairperson of the Workers' Compensation Commission.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises legal, technical, clerical and other staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Supervises operation and activities of the office and staff engaged in preparation of legal memoranda for use in decision making by the Compensation Review Board; schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans office work; develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and procedures; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; researches and analyzes complex legal questions and issues; analyzes Workers' Compensation findings, awards and dismissals; drafts legal decisions; reviews summaries and legal implications for Compensation Review Board; supervises and participates in special research projects as assigned; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply legal principles and practices; considerable knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply relevant state and federal laws and rules of practices; considerable knowledge of and ability to apply legal research techniques; considerable knowledge of administrative law; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years experience as an attorney in the practice of Workers' Compensation law.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must be admitted to practice law in the State of Connecticut.
