PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for performing a full range of basic technical tasks and assisting professionals in fisheries biology.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Initially works under close supervision of a professional employee of higher grade; works more independently with acquired experience.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

  • May lead permanent and/or seasonal employees and other assigned employees of lower grade.
  • May oversee work of contractors or volunteers and in the Forest Management Division, fire crews.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Primarily performs basic technical functions in area of fisheries biology; 
  • Performs and leads sampling operations assuring established methods followed; 
  • Collects, compiles and prepares necessary data and samples for professional analysis and/or inclusion in research studies, special projects or operational reports; 
  • Operates vessel and equipment as required; 
  • Assures proper and safe handling by work crews of specimens collected, research vessel, sampling equipment and other related tools and equipment; 
  • Repairs or recommends repair of vessels, tools or equipment as needed; 
  • Maintains records; 
  • Conducts and leads conduct of field interviews and surveys; 
  • Prepares basic reports and correspondence as needed; 
  • May perform data entry; 
  • May prepare visual materials such as maps and graphs; 
  • May conduct basic tours or instructional sessions and assist in development of educational materials and programs; 
  • May perform basic statistical analysis under direct professional supervision; 
  • May be required to live on board a vessel for extended periods of time without relief; 
  • May perform and lead workers in the marking and/or care and feeding of fish; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of basic principles, practices and techniques of fisheries biology including species identification, collection, sampling, diet, disease, disease diagnosis, marking techniques, habitat and ecology of fish and waterlife, measurement and handling;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of technical experience in fisheries biology, primarily involving functions such as sampling, data collection, data compilation, boating operations and education.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in an environmental science with related courses in fisheries biology may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must be willing and able to accept assignment or transfer to any area of the state.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a standard first aid certificate and perform emergency first aid as needed.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to live on or near work site.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from on-site field conditions and a moderate degree of discomfort from year-round weather conditions.
