PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Education and Connecticut Technical Education and Career System assists the Secretary, State Board of Education or the Executive Director and Superintendent of the Technical Education and Career System in the performance of special assignments in matters pertaining to educational policy and other responsibilities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives administrative direction from the Secretary, State Board of Education or the Executive Director of the Technical Education and Career System.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May direct staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Acts as an executive assistant to the Secretary, State Board of Education or to the Executive Director of the Technical Education and Career System;
  • Prepares policy materials for presentation to the State Board of Education or Connecticut Technical Education and Career System advisory board;
  • Participates in the planning of educational goals and strategies;
  • Coordinates the dissemination of information to interested parties;
  • Assists in the organization and staffing of units;
  • Prepares reports on matters of concern to the State Board of Education or Connecticut Technical Education and Career System advisory board as required;
  • Performs research projects as directed;
  • Participates in the recruitment and hiring of staff, including outreach, interview and selection;
  • May assist in developing the State Board of Education or Connecticut Technical Education and Career System advisory board agenda;
  • May work with representatives of the state, federal, local and legislative agencies on educational matters;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • basic philosophy of education;
    • organizational behavior and planning;
  • Considerable oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • plan educational policy;
    • prepare comprehensive reports;
    • develop and maintain cooperative working relationships;
  • Administrative ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Demonstrated competence to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position as determined by the State Board of Education or the Technical Education and Career System.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class at the Department of Education must hold an appropriate certificate issued by the State Board of Education.

APPOINTMENT

Appointment to this class will be made by the State Board of Education in accordance with Section 10-2 of the Connecticut General Statutes or the Executive Director of the Technical Education and Career System in accordance with the provisions of Section 4-8 and 10-95r (a) of the Connecticut General Statutes.
