PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Departments of Developmental Services and Mental Health and Addiction Services this class is accountable for supervising in-service training programs for staff involved in providing services to individuals with intellectual or psychiatric disability.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of a higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May supervise lower level employees.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans, develops, implements and evaluates in-service training programs for staff including orientation programs for new employees; 
  • Determines training needs through use of formal needs assessment, federal and state mandated in-services, Consent Decree and requests from supervisors and department heads; 
  • Develops course objectives and curricula to meet specific training needs; 
  • Selects most appropriate training methods to accomplish course objectives; 
  • Conducts training sessions utilizing lectures, role playing, seminars, group discussions and audio visual presentations; 
  • Provides consultation and technical assistance to other trainers; 
  • Recommends and initiates changes in training methods and materials to effect improvements; 
  • Reviews training courses to determine effectiveness and appropriateness of contents; 
  • May conduct training sessions for staff involved in providing services to individuals with intellectual disability in private residential facilities and community training homes or to individuals with psychiatric disability in an inpatient, community and/or outpatient program; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of methods and techniques of planning, developing, implementing and evaluating training programs; 
  • Knowledge of
    • methods and techniques necessary to identify and analyze training needs and determine objectives for training programs; 
    • adult education training methods and techniques including computer-based training and related equipment; 
    • principles and practices of care, training, habilitation and rehabilitation of individuals with intellectual or psychiatric disability; 
  • Considerable
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in the care and treatment of individuals serviced by the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must include primary responsibility for conducting staff training programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

  • College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
  • A Master's degree in a behavioral science, education or a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required to maintain CPR, PMT, Medication Administration and First Aid certificates.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
