In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in general carpentry repairs and new construction work.
Receives general direction from a Correctional Maintenance Supervisor or other employee of higher grade.
Performs general carpentry and minor new construction work; builds, repairs and installs counters, partitions, floors, doors, building frame work and trim using carpenter's hand tools and power tools; instructs inmates assigned to maintenance carpentry; demonstrates proper use of tools, materials and methods of carpentry; plans, lays out and schedules work; trains inmates in reading of blueprints and schematic drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of operations; maintains custody and discipline and evaluates performance of each inmate assigned to work area; keeps records and makes necessary reports; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbance and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods and tools involved in carpentry trade; oral and written communication skills; interpersonal skills; ability to read and interpret blueprints; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; ability to instruct inmates in methods and techniques of trade; ability to plan layout and schedule assignments; ability to estimate cost of jobs; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who have access to tools of the trade as weapons and may be exposed to the danger and discomfort associated with tasks and machinery used in the trade.
