In a Department of Correction facility or district, this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for inmates and/or independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration and related control systems.
Receives general direction from a Correctional Maintenance Supervisor or other employee of higher grade.
Performs highly skilled maintenance and construction work requiring application of trade skills, codes and standard trade practices; trains and supervises a group of inmates assigned to heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration tasks; ensures compliance with standard trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating, and refrigeration; troubleshoots and performs work in operation, repair and installation of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems which may use Freon chilled water for air cooling means and air or water for condenser means; installs or repairs electric or pneumatic controls for equipment; determines required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas; uses and interprets a psychometric chart; utilizes diagnostic equipment to control and measure air flow, room air changes and room pressurization; operates and maintains building and energy management systems; performs preventative maintenance tasks; maintains custody and discipline and evaluates performance of each inmate assigned to work areas; determines and obtains required materials; maintains records; operates heavy equipment as necessary; may perform supplemental duties related to other trade disciplines based on experience, knowledge, skills and agency needs; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances, and otherwise assist security forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration trade; knowledge of hazardous material regulations; knowledge of computer based heating and cooling systems; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to operate and interpret computerized and automated control systems; ability to plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to read schematics and flow charts; ability to instruct inmates or other employees in the techniques and skills used in the trade; ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; some supervisory ability.

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to danger of injury or assault by inmates who have access to tools of the trade as weapons and may be exposed to the danger and discomfort associated with tasks and machinery used in the trade.
