In the Department of Consumer Protection this class is accountable for supervising inspectors engaged in inspection, testing, and investigation activities or specific division programs and activities.
Receives general direction from the Consumer Protection Division Director or other employee of higher grade.
Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans inspection work; establishes and maintains inspection procedures; makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; reviews inspection reports and laboratory results for compliance; supervises investigations; prepares evidence for and testifies at hearings and in court; conducts inservice training; speaks before groups and the media; conducts research and compiles statistics on division activities; prepares correspondence and reports; may perform field inspection and investigations; may assist Director with administrative duties; performs related duties as required.
Supervises field or program activities pertaining to inspection and testing of all commercial scales, gasoline dispensers, fuel oil meters, taxi meters and other measuring devices to ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations; supervises field activities pertaining to state packaging and labeling regulations and to gasoline station price sign requirements; supervises laboratory analysis of supplies obtained by field inspections.
Considerable knowledge of weighing and measuring devices and packaging methods; considerable knowledge of technical and professional resources for weights and measures; considerable skill in utilizing statistical sampling plans and performing calculations; considerable knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations; considerable knowledge of inspection and investigation methods and techniques; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; considerable ability to interpret statutes and analyze facts; supervisory ability.
Seven (7) years of experience in the inspection and enforcement of relevant consumer protection laws and regulations.
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been inspecting and investigating consumer protection complaints at the level of Consumer Protection Inspector.
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift heavy objects and exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
