PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for performing the most complex wetlands restoration activities.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the limited supervision of an employee of higher grade.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May lead staff as assigned.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Performs specialized tasks involved in restoration of wetlands; 
  • Performs maintenance and repair work on existing control structures such as ditches, tide gates, dikes and culverts; 
  • Operates heavy equipment such as clamshell diggers, rotary diggers, bulldozers, bucket loader, backhoe and dump truck; 
  • Performs complex mechanical repairs such as timing, working on distributors, adjusting carburetors, flushing out brake or fuel systems, etc.; 
  • Uses, maintains and repairs hand and power tools and equipment; 
  • Keeps records and prepares reports; 
  • Repairs and maintains equipment; 
  • Performs road maintenance; 
  • May perform carpentry and painting tasks; 
  • May do planting and transplanting; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of
    • methods of wetlands restoration; 
    • physical properties of standard construction materials; 
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills; 
    • oral and written communication skills; 
    • in operating heavy equipment; 
  • Ability to
    • effectively operate specialized equipment in wetlands environment; 
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in agricultural, construction or general maintenance and repair work.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
  • Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and exposed to discomfort from extreme weather conditions, insects and risk of injury from equipment.
