PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Division of Criminal Justice this class is accountable for conducting investigations related to preparation and prosecution of juvenile delinquency offenses and Families With Service Needs petitions.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of a Juvenile Prosecutor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

In juvenile matters interviews clients and victims; locates and interviews potential witnesses; acts as a liaison with law enforcement agencies; prepares charts and diagrams related to trial; acts as liaison with forensic witnesses; assesses client potential and eligibility for placement and rehabilitative programs; prepares written reports of investigations; confers with juvenile prosecutor regarding investigative activities; serves subpoenas and related legal documents; maintains liaison with DCJ Inspectors, DCJ Investigators, probation staff and a variety of other persons or agencies; may examine and photograph crime scenes and other relevant locations; may arrange referral to social service agencies; may transport clients and victims to court proceedings; may testify on results of investigations; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations; considerable knowledge of investigative methods and techniques; knowledge of rules of evidence and legal processes; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; considerable interviewing skills; ability to gather and interpret data.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience as a law enforcement officer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

A Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Candidates must have a valid motor vehicle operator license and a vehicle available for daily business use.

COMPENSATION GUIDELINES

1. The classification of DCJ Juvenile Investigator is assigned to Salary Group DC19.
2. Employees shall proceed through that salary group and then shall proceed to Step 8 of Salary Group DC21.
3. The Job Code is identified as Salary Plan DC in CORE-CT.
