At the University of Connecticut, this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor over the dispatch operation engaged in providing communication between law enforcement, fire responders, other emergency disciplines, students and public.
There will be a maximum of one (1) dispatcher per shift per location to supervise and perform police, fire and other emergency services dispatching and 24 hour Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) calls.
Receives general direction from the Public Safety Communication Manager, Police Sergeant, or an employee of a higher grade.
Leads UConn Dispatchers and other staff as assigned.
Plans UConn Dispatcher workflow and determines priorities; schedules hours and days of work to ensure shift coverage including third shift, weekends and holidays; assigns, oversees and reviews work to ensure adherence to policy, procedure, state and federal regulations and laws; provides staff training and assistance; conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; leads dispatch staff to follow established procedures during an incident response; leads multi-discipline emergency calls to expedite dispatch calls to first responders which may include, but not limited to, police, fire, medical, hazard mat, State Police, crisis negotiation team, bomb squad and other police staff; serves as lead communication point of contact with incident commander; receives, responds, and resolves, within limits of authority, non-emergency complaints and inquiries; performs duties of a UConn Dispatcher; troubleshoots and repairs simple dispatch equipment and arranges for maintenance and repairs; generates a variety of dispatch reports which may include, but not limited to, visitor, property and crime logs, dispatcher shift activity report and verifies same for accuracy; may make recommendations on policies or standards; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of communications equipment; considerable knowledge of laws, rules and regulations governing radio communications equipment; knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply state and federal laws, statutes, regulations and procedural guidelines relating to law enforcement; considerable knowledge of dispatch protocol; interpersonal skills; oral and written communications skills; ability to schedule and prioritize workflow; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.
Three (3) years of experience in dispatching emergency vehicles and reporting to 911 calls.
