PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a large college bookstore (Norwalk and Tunxis Community Colleges) this class is accountable for the operation of a bookstore and supervision of employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives general direction from a college administrative official.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Supervises the bookstore staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Supervises a system of inventory control; 
  • Anticipates and analyzes needs and is responsible for the purchase of all merchandise to be sold; 
  • Determines selling prices and controls obsolescence; 
  • Directs the maintenance of financial and personnel records; 
  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; 
  • Provides staff training and assistance; 
  • Conducts performance evaluations; 
  • Determines priorities and plans store work; 
  • Establishes and maintains store procedures; 
  • Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards; 
  • Acts as liaison with other departments, agencies and others regarding store policies and procedures; 
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of
    • principles and methods of retail purchasing and merchandising; 
    • stocking and inventory control methods; 
  • Considerable
    • oral and written communications skills; 
    • interpersonal skills; 
  • Ability to utilize computer software; 
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Six (6) years of experience in retailing in a bookstore setting.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been in a working lead capacity at the level of a Bookstore Assistant Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
