In the Departments of Administrative Services and Public Health this class is accountable for acting as a specialist in fire safety and construction.
Works under the supervision of a Fire and Life Safety Supervisor, Public Health Fire Safety and Construction Unit Supervisor or other employee of higher grade.
Performs specialized duties to ensure compliance with relevant state and federal requirements for various facilities; provides extensive technical assistance to other staff, architects, engineers and others in areas of building, fire and health safety, facilities design and code compliance; conducts and reviews inspections, surveys, reports and recommendations; reviews plans and specifications prepared by architects and engineers to ensure conformance with codes, regulations and standards; inspects projects in process to determine conformity with plans and specifications; may conduct and/or review feasibility studies for various facility projects; may plan and conduct in-service training programs or training for other state agencies or groups; may inspect amusement park and/or carnival rides; may participate in hearings or meetings involving code violations and citations; may assist in development and implementation of disaster preparedness program; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of building design, construction and systems; considerable knowledge of building, health and fire safety codes and standard tests for fire rating; knowledge of building materials and equipment; knowledge of health facility building requirements; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to review plans and specifications in relation to code compliance; ability to plan and conduct building engineering surveys and investigations; ability to utilize computer software.
Six (6) years of experience in building design, engineering, construction or inspection including demonstrated experience in reviewing plans and specifications for code compliance for large scale building projects.
Note: Large scale building projects will be interpreted as buildings exceeding 12,000 square feet in size and more than one story in height not including apartment buildings and single family residences.
College training in architecture, architectural, mechanical, civil, structural or electrical engineering or building construction or related courses in fire technology, fire and life safety systems design or a related discipline may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as be able to effectively perform the duties.
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from exposure to building construction site, fire scene or structural failure environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year-round weather conditions.
This replaces the existing specification for the class of Building and Fire Safety Inspector 2 in Salary Group ET 23 approved effective June 4, 2010. (2013 SCOPE Review)
