PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, Bureau of Air Management, this class is accountable for a full range of basic tasks involving the installation, operation, calibration and maintenance of air sampling and meteorological equipment and data acquisition systems.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of an employee of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May lead permanent or seasonal Environmental Protection Maintainers or lower level employees.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Installs, operates, calibrates, maintains, and repairs air sampling and meteorological equipment; operates equipment to maximize data output and interprets data; performs field and laboratory tests, measurements, and analyses of air pollutants using standardized procedures; selects monitoring sites and installs new air sampling and meteorological instruments and equipment in both new and existing sites; may perform special purpose monitoring studies; documents all procedures related to equipment operation and data collection; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of the basic chemical, electrical, and mechanical principles involved in the operation and repair of air sampling and meteorological instruments and equipment, including electronic types; some knowledge of air pollution control laws, rules, and regulations; knowledge of standard hand and power tools; knowledge of basic laboratory techniques/procedures; ability to operate field/laboratory testing equipment; some interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to interpret data, charts and graphs; ability to utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Four (4) years of experience in the installation, calibration, operation and maintenance of chemical, mechanical and electronic equipment and instruments.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training in electronics, physics, chemistry or engineering technology with courses in air pollution control or air sampling and monitoring may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be exposed to a moderate degree of danger of injury or physical harm from falls or lifting heavy equipment or from dangerous fumes; may also be exposed to a moderate degree of discomfort from environmental conditions and equipment noise.
