PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Developmental Services this class is accountable for developing and maintaining the medical program of a state training school.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Receives administrative direction from the Developmental Services Training School Director, Developmental Services Assistant Director of Resources or other administrator of higher grade.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervises medical staff of the institution.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Directs staff and operation of medical program of facility including medical care for individuals, specialized medical services to employees such as dental clinic, x-ray units, diagnostic laboratory, pharmacy and physical and occupational therapy; plans and manages medical staff activities; develops and implements policies and regulations; implements new procedures and procedural revisions; interprets and administers pertinent laws, statutes and regulations; develops and maintains medical program budget; designs and implements performance review standards for staff; advises Director in selection of medical staff including physicians, dentists, nurses, technicians and hospital ancillary personnel; arranges for medical and surgical consultation services; stimulates medical research; develops and supervises medical intern and residency training programs including direct teaching responsibilities involved; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and techniques; considerable knowledge of principles and practices of medicine involving care and treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities; considerable knowledge of hospital administration; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; considerable skill in diagnosis, surgery and treatment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of experience as a physician in the care and treatment of individuals with intellectual disabilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license to practice medicine and surgery in Connecticut. A temporary license shall exist for a period not to exceed one (1) year.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
