The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) seeks a talented and qualified professional for the position of Nurse Clinical Instructor in the Education and Staff Development Unit. This is a full time, 35 hour per week position with a work schedule of Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:00pm based out of New Haven, CT.  However, work schedule flexibility is required in order to meet the demands of the job.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state health care facility or institution this class is accountable for developing curricula and teaching the principles and practices of nursing and health related subjects to nursing personnel and interdisciplinary staff.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

This position plays an important role in the delivery of medical based training to both DDS employees as well as private sector employees.  At present, the NCI assigned to the Staff Development unit is responsible for providing training to all DDS employees; Medication Administration; CPR; Dysphagia; Signs and Systems; Food Safety and Preparation; New Employee Introduction to working with Individuals with Developmental Disabilities; Mechanical Lifts; Infection Control; Nurse Orientation; Endorsed Instructor Course; LPN Authorization Program; Trained Course. This position will be based out of the New Haven office. Travel and training will be required throughout the state with weekend and evening shifts at times. In particular, this position will coordinate and conduct the medication administration and re-certification process for DDS Public Program employees as well as private sector employees.  The NCI teaches the 21-hour Medication Administration Course as well as conducts the re-certification process which includes a review class prior to the re-certification exams.  Additionally, NCI conducts tutoring for staff that requires additional help to pass the initial exam & a 1.5-hour review for each individual staff when there is a medication error.  The NCI conducts the OSHA mandated Hep B vaccine program.  Related duties include participating in the state-wide NCI meetings, the monthly Regional Nursing meetings, curriculum development for health-related topics, updating the Infection Control curriculum, consultant and resource to Region nurses and employees. KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of nursing in appropriate specialty serviced by agency; knowledge of teaching, counseling and evaluation principles and techniques; considerable interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to develop curricula; ability to interview; ability to identify the potential of applicants for health careers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in hospital or institutional nursing as a registered professional nurse in the appropriate specialty serviced by the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of Head Nurse working with the type of individuals serviced by the agency.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. A Bachelor's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) year of the General Experience.
2. A Master's degree in nursing may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates who possess:  

  • Endorsed Instructor Certification;
  • Experience with Virtual Training of the Medical Administration Program;
  • Experience with Microsoft Teams and Excel.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license as a registered professional nurse in Connecticut.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
