Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

Supplemental Questionnaire:  A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification. Applications must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

DESCRIPTION


THE AGENCY
The mission of Public Works is to enhance the quality of life for the people of Alameda County by providing a safe, well-maintained, and lasting public works infrastructure through accessible, responsive and effective services.

Public services provided by the Alameda County Public Works Agency include flood and storm water pollution control, transportation planning and design, roadway and flood control maintenance and inspection, and construction and building inspections. 

The goals of the Agency are to keep roads safe and well maintained, provide the highest level of flood protection, provide service levels that optimize infrastructure life cycles, minimize deferred maintenance, ensure that development and construction adhere to applicable State and County rules, optimize disaster preparedness, response and recover, ensure that the Agency’s operations and services minimize negative impacts on the environment, and sustain and advance County and Agency programs through a vital business and administrative support system.

THE POSITION
Under direction, the Senior Heavy Equipment Parts Technician will plan, monitor and manage the ordering, purchasing, storing, billing, issuing and maintenance control of heavy equipment parts, equipment, accessories and supplies utilized in the service and repair of County and other agencies vehicles and equipment; and to perform other related duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of two years in the class of Auto Parts Technician in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of three years’ full-time experience involving the ordering, purchasing, issuing, and inventory control of heavy equipment parts and/or automotive parts and accessories; one year of the experience must have been in a lead or supervisory capacity.

License/Certification:

Possess and maintain a valid California Motor Vehicle Class C Driver’s License. Candidates must submit evidence from the DMV showing current status of their license at the time of application and must have a clean driving record for the previous three-year period. Possess a valid Forklift Operator Certificate.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
• Heavy equipment parts and automotive parts, equipment, and accessories used in the repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles and construction equipment.
• Vehicle repair and maintenance procedures and terminology.
• Standard warehouse and storeroom operation and equipment.
• Stock and inventory control including computerized systems.
• Record keeping and filing systems including automated systems.
• Local automotive parts and equipment suppliers and vendors.
• Basic techniques of research, survey and compilation of data.

Ability to:
• Monitor and coordinate the maintenance and requisition of a variety of heavy equipment parts, automotive parts and related supplies.
• Lead and train technical and clerical staff.
• Maintaining accurate files and records including automated systems.
• Simple arithmetic calculations.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

  1. Review of candidates' application to verify possession of minimum requirements.  Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. A review of the supplemental questionnaire to further verify knowledge, skill and ability.
  3. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates' final examination score.  The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.

*The combined oral examination/hiring interview, in addition to establishing an eligibility list, may serve as the final selection interview for vacancies in this classification.
