Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

Supplemental Questionnaire:  A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY

Zone 7 Water Agency supplies treated drinking water to retailers serving approximately 260,000 residents and businesses in Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin and, through special agreement with the Dublin San Ramon Services District, the Dougherty Valley area of San Ramon. Zone 7 also supplies untreated irrigation water (mostly to vineyards) and provides flood protection to eastern Alameda County.

THE POSITION

Under general supervision, performs heavy physical labor work required for the construction, maintenance, or repair of facilities and equipment found in a water distribution system, water treatment facilities or flood control facilities; and performs related work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has experience with a proven track record of success that demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

  • A strong record of successful experience in construction, pipeline and/or vegetation maintenance
  • Experience operating a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools used in course of work.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment (such as backhoe, bobcat, skiploader, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others to accomplish established work goals.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage time effectively to ensure that all tasks and assignments are completed in a timely manner.
  • Established ability to accurately complete work and tasks while paying close attention to details.
  • Proven safety record with the ability to identify safety issues and take corrective action.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, accurately and carefully following established procedures for completing work tasks.
  • Sufficient agility, strength and endurance to perform building and facilities maintenance, repair and construction work and operate various hand, power and shop tools.
  • Willing and able to work in a variety of conditions, including in exposure to potentially hazardous materials, in confined spaces, and outdoors in all weather conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  

The equivalent of two (2) years of experience in construction, pipeline and/or vegetation maintenance work, which has provided the required knowledge and skills.    

License:  

Possession of a valid California Driver’s license.  

Other Requirements:

  • Must be willing to work in areas with potential exposure to hazardous materials, in confined spaces with respiratory protection equipment, with frequent exposure to traffic and machine noise, and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Occasionally works in excavations with unsanitary conditions.
  • Requires sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual labor, equipment operation, inspection and maintenance tasks, and to unload, store and transfer supplies and equipment.

  • Distribution systems, its components and reading and interpreting records, drawings, valve books, and in using electronic records.
  • CAL/OSHA and DOT traffic safety and how to properly set up signs and barricades and maintain a safe work site.
  • Pavement restoration procedures.
  • Vegetation management  

Ability to:

  • Operate and utilize the proper equipment, tools and select materials to maintain and repair the distribution system and its components or flood control channels.
  • Follow written and oral directions.
  • Complete work assignments independently.
  • Use safety equipment and observe safe work methods.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
  • Perform general manual duties requiring mechanical aptitude & manual dexterity.
  • Prepare subgrade, set final grade, surface restoration, and place concrete.
  • Perform manual duties requiring use of proper tools and methods for tree/shrub trimming.
  • Perform basic computer operation including ability to read plans and interpret records, drawings, and project tracking.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

  1. Review of candidates' application to verify possession of minimum requirements.  Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. A review of the supplemental questionnaire to further verify knowledge, skill and ability.
  3. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates' final examination score.  The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.
