The scores and dispositions of candidates for this examination will be merged with previous exam participants. If you have previously submitted an application and choose to reapply, you new score/disposition will replace your current disposition.

Application and Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY

Alameda County General Services Agency (GSA) delivers a host of logistical support services to County agencies and partners from maintenance of facilities and County fleet to energy and environmental management services, capital project management, procurement services, and clean commute and recycling programs. The GSA Community strives not only to provide these services but to also facilitate collaborative and innovative approaches in its efforts.

While the GSA Community largely focuses on support services for Alameda County departments and other public agencies, the work has a direct impact on the communities. GSA builds structures such as libraries and youth centers that transform communities, provides opportunities for local businesses, and works towards ensuring that County work practices minimize negative impacts to the environment. THE POSITION

Under general supervision the incumbent performs the work of a journey-level carpenter and cabinetmaker; and to do related work as required.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

In addition to meeting minimum qualifications for the position of Carpenter, the ideal candidate will possess the following critical attributes:

  • Outstanding carpentry/cabinetmaker skills necessary to repair or maintain existing structures as well as to build cabinets, shelving, etc.
  • Strong attention to detail resulting in quality product.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with all trades associated with building maintenance; a willingness to learn from others and to share knowledge.
  • Commitment to exceptional customer service.
  • Effectively manages time by appropriately prioritizing work enabling a high level of performance while allowing consideration for changing needs and customer demand.
  • Proven safety record as demonstrated by the ability to identify safety issues and take corrective action. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of four years’ full-time experience as a Building Maintenance Worker II in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority and Consolidated Courts.)

Or II
Education:

Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship in the carpentry/cabinetmaker trade.

And
Experience:

The equivalent of three years’ experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker. Additional experience as a journey-level carpenter or cabinetmaker may substitute for an apprenticeship on a year for year basis.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds safely.
Must be able and willing to work outside in all types of weather conditions.
Must be able to climb and work from ladders and/or scaffolding.
Must be able and willing to work in confined areas.
Must be able to use a respirator.
Must comply with the medical surveillance program related to lead and asbestos, as required by OSHA/Cal-OSHA.
Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• Modern methods, materials, hand and power tools, and equipment used in rough and finished carpentry and in cabinet making.
• Building, Fire, Life Safety and OSHA safety codes.
• General construction safety practices.
• Hazardous Materials Awareness (asbestos, lead paint, MSDS).
• Basic computer skills including knowledge of Outlook.
• Mathematical calculations used in the carpentry trade.

Ability to:

• Skillfully use the tools and equipment of the carpenter's and cabinetmaker's trades.
• Work safely.
• Communicate clearly orally and in writing.
• Provide excellent customer service.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Work independently as well as part of a team.
• Plan, organize, prioritize and keep track of assignments and materials.
• Collaborate and coordinate with other trades.
• Supervise non-journey workers.
• Adapt to changing work priorities.
• Keep tools and materials secure.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

  1. A review of candidates' application to verify possession of minimum requirements.  Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. A performance component that will be weighted at 100% of the final examination score.
