THIS IS A REOPENING OF AN EXISTING EXAMINATION.  If you have previously applied or started an application for the Janitor, Examination #18-7410-10, please contact the examination analyst, Elaine Lemi at  elaine.lemi@acgov.org to reapply.  In order to reapply you must contact the analyst to have your previous application released back to you.

The scores and dispositions of candidates for this examination will be merged with previous exam participants.  If you have previously submitted an application and choose to reapply, you new score/disposition will replace your current disposition. 

Application and Supplemental Questionnaire:  A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application.  Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Failure to submit the supplemental questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION


THE AGENCY
Alameda County's General Services Agency delivers a host of support services to County departments and agencies. These services fall into several major categories: Technical — architectural, engineering, energy and hazardous materials management; Building Maintenance — building maintenance and repairs, janitorial services and minor remodeling and alterations; Construction — new facilities and major remodeling; Procurement — purchasing and contract administration; Fleet Services; Childcare Planning; Human Resources, Payroll, Information Systems and Parking Administration.  The mission of the GSA is to provide high quality, cost effective, and timely support services for County departments and other public agencies, so they can better serve the public and business community.

THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to clean a small building or an assigned area in a large building, and to perform related duties. Janitors must be able to work independently as their work is not subject to continuous supervision, rather it is inspected upon completion or while in progress.

Vacancies are currently located at the Santa Rita Jail.  However, the list created by this recruitment may be used to fill other locations within the County

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications stated below, the ideal candidate will possess the following critical attributes:

  • Proven experience as a janitor working in large facilities or institutions such as jails and juvenile institutions.
  • Ability to adjust to changes in work environments, work responsibilities, clients, equipment and supplies while maintaining a safe and satisfactory level of performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new equipment, procedures, and cleaning methods and immediately apply them to the tasks at hand.
  • Commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally with staff, team members and customers.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks to ensure that they are completed in a timely manner. 
  • Ability to accurately complete work and tasks while paying close attention to all details.
  • Proven safety record as demonstrated by the ability to identify safety issues and immediately report concerns and/or take corrective action.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

The equivalent of six months’ full-time janitorial experience in offices or an institution.

License:

Some positions may require a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirement:

Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

• Modern janitorial methods, materials and equipment, soaps, detergents, disinfectants, cleaning compounds, extractors, and pressure washers.

Ability to:

• Communicate both orally and in writing.
• Understand and follow instructions.
• Perform repetitive tasks without continuous supervision.
• Work effectively with a wide variety of people.
• Correctly and safely use janitorial materials, products and equipment.
• Lift up to 50 pounds.
• Learn basic computer skills.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

1. A review of the candidates’ applications to verify possession of minimum requirements. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.

2. A performance examination which will be qualifying only (pass/fail). Candidates who pass the performance examination will move forward to the next step of the examination process.

3. SITE Clearance. All employees working in a detention facility must successfully obtain SITE clearance.

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
