Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended. Applications must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

DESCRIPTION

 

 

The Alameda County Library provides library services from ten branch libraries in the cities of Albany, Dublin, Fremont, Newark and Union City and the unincorporated communities of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo. Outreach services are provided through the Bookmobile, the Literacy Program, the Senior Outreach Program, and the County Jails.

THE POSITION 

Under close supervision, to do general manual and clerical work in a public library; and to do related work as required. 


EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

  • Shelves books and other library resources according to the library's classification system.
  • Maintains proper order and neatness of collections; arranges materials, shelves and fixtures to maximize browse-ability. 
  • Collects materials from book-drop; receives bins of library material received from the branches.
  • Retrieves materials for use from public and non-public areas.
  • Checks in and sorts materials using a computer terminal, automated materials handling system, or other equipment.
  • Answers patrons' basic location questions for material and services and refers patrons to appropriate staff for more complex questions or service needs.
  • Directs patrons to library self-service options such as self-checkout machines, catalog stations, and kiosks.
  • Assists in setup and takedown of library meeting spaces.

 

THE VACANCY

There are currently various vacancies in the Alameda County Library System. The positions may include working evening and weekend shifts as assigned in any location throughout the Alameda County Library. This includes, but is not limited to the Albany, Castro Valley, Dublin, Fremont, Newark, San Lorenzo, and Union City locations. Location preference must be reflected in the application.

 

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed below, the ideal candidate will encompass the following attributes, and have demonstrated a successful track record in:

  • Ability of physical stamina to be able to shelve, carry, and move library materials from one place to another.
  • Competency for accurately completing assignments and tasks, while paying attention to detail and set processes.
  • Consistently managing time and resources to appropriately prioritize and complete goals and objectives.
  • Successfully completing work independently.  
  • Excellent customer service with a superior command of oral communication with experience communicating with various types of people from diverse backgrounds. 

 

NoteThis is the entry-level position within the County Library System. The main focus of the Library Page position is to ensure that all library materials are readily available in an organized and accurate order to help promote the image of the library. The Library Page position requires physical abilities that relate to the handling of a variety of library materials. This includes standing for the majority of your work day, walking, bending, kneeling, grasping, carrying, pushing, and reaching. Some materials may weigh up to 40 lbs

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of the following knowledge and abilities: 

 • Must be age 16 by examination closing date. 

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:
• Numerical and alphabetical filing systems.

Ability to:
• Work courteously and tactfully with coworkers and the public.
• Learn library procedures.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Type accurately.
• Move large amounts of books from shelves, floors, bins and carts.
• Pay sufficient attention to detail.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS: 

 

  1. A review of candidates' application to verify possession of minimum requirements.  The Supplemental Questionnaire will be used for further screening of minimum qualifications. Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process;
  2. A written component that will be weighted as qualifying only (pass/fail). Candidates who pass the written test will be invited to the final step in the examination process;
  3. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidate's final examination score.

 

 CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION
