Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION.  The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year, but can be extended.

Applications and Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.  Failure to submit the Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

DESCRIPTION

THE AGENCY

Zone 7 provides treated drinking water to four major water retailers serving around 220,000 residents and businesses. The retailers are: the City of Pleasanton; the City of Livermore; California Water Service Company - Livermore; and Dublin San Ramon Services District, which provides water service to Dublin and the Dougherty Valley area of San Ramon

THE POSITION

Safety Technician II, under general supervision, assists in the development and maintenance of the safety management program in the Zone 7 Water Agency, assists and performs routine activities in the administration of assigned safety program segments; to assist in training, sampling, monitoring, record keeping and equipment maintenance activities in the administration of assigned safety program segments; to assist in the planning, conducting and coordinating of occupational safety and health program segments; and to perform other related work as required

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate has experience with a proven track record of success that demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities in the following areas:

 

·         Possesses relevant knowledge and experience with Employee Health and Safety and Environmental Compliance principles, industry standards, and pertinent local, state, and federal regulations.

·         Is an effective communicator, with the ability to interact professionally, while possessing the ability to communicate technical and regulatory terms into an easily understood context, to a wide range of individuals and groups.

·         Ability to work closely with management and supervisors to implement and coordinate programs to ensure compliance.

·         Will be proactive and adaptable in addressing challenges and opportunities.

·         Is efficient and organized, with the ability to work under pressure with frequent interruptions, all while maintaining a high-quality output.

·         Must have CPR, first aid, confined space, HAZWOP certifications.

·         Advanced computer skills including relevant industry-specific web-based and database programs.

·         Works in both an office and field environment, travelling between multiple locations, with exposure to: noise, dust, chemicals, fumes, gases, grease, water, confined spaces, slippery/uneven surfaces, machinery.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EITHER I

Experience:

The equivalent of four years full-time experience as a Safety Technician I, Zone 7 or higher-level class in the Alameda County classified service, which included safety resources duties and responsibilities. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

Education:

The equivalent of completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in industrial safety, Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), construction technology or a related field, AND

Experience:

Six years of experience equivalent to the Safety Technician, I level.

Licenses:

Possession of a valid state of California driver’s license.

Certificates:

Valid CPR Certification.
Valid First Aid Certification.
Valid Confined space entry training.
Valid HAZWOP certification.

OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS

Environmental Conditions
Works in both an office and field environment; travels from site to site; has exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, fumes, gases, grease; works in water, in confined spaces, and on slippery and uneven surfaces; works with machinery.

Physical Conditions
Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate or heavy lifting; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; operating motorized equipment and vehicles; using hand and power tools and equipment; bending, twisting, crouching, and reaching above shoulder height.

• Work processes, equipment, and environmental conditions involved in construction and facility maintenance work, including standard protective devices and accident prevention measures.

• Basic mathematics in order to make calculations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, averages and percentages.

• Keep a variety of work records and prepare reports (e.g., training attendance, equipment status, hazardous material pickups, dosimeter assignment, and distribution of personal safety equipment).
• Operate and maintain a variety of safety equipment and hand and power tools.
• Operate a motor vehicle safely and in accordance with traffic laws and Agency policies.
• Lift moderately to heavy objects.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

The examination will consist of the following steps:

  1. A review of candidates' application to verify possession of minimum requirements.  Those candidates who possess the minimum requirements for the class will move on to the next step in the examination process.
  2. A review of the supplemental questionnaire to determine the best qualified.
  3. An oral interview which will be weighted as 100% of the candidates' final examination score.  The oral interview may contain situational exercises.

Candidates must attain a qualifying rating on each portion of this recruitment.
