Under general supervision, cleans a small building or an assigned area in a secure, 24/7 detention facility (Juvenile Justice Center and Santa Rita Jail); and performs related duties.    


The classification of Janitor, Detention Facilities is located in the General Services Agency, working in a county detention facility and reporting to a Janitor Supervisor II. The class of Janitor, Detention Facilities is distinguished from the next higher class of Lead Janitor, Detention Facilities in that the latter class not only performs janitorial work, but also has lead responsibility for janitorial staff within a detention facility. The class of Janitor, Detention Facilities is distinguished from Janitor Floor Specialist, Detention Facilities in that the latter is primarily assigned to maintain the floors in detention facilities throughout the County. The class of Janitor, Detention Facilities is distinguished from Janitor in that the former reports to a supervisor who oversees, a secure, 24/7 detention facility and may be assigned to a secure, 24/7 detention facility.


NOTE:  The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.  

All Janitors, Detention Facilities may perform the following duties:

  1. Sweeps, mops, vacuums floors, dusts, washes walls using pressure washers; dusts and polishes wood surfaces; polishes metal fixtures; dusts books and files and spot cleans doors, window coverings and venetian blinds.
  2. Cleans stairs, stairwells and entranceways to the curb.  Pressure washes patios, stairs, entranceways and balconies, rakes litter in parking lot and cleans walk off mats.
  3. Cleans and disinfects washrooms and keeps them well stocked; uses various cleaning agents to wash walls, fixtures and inside windows; cleans glass at entrances in a thorough manner, and requests or orders adequate supplies to complete work.
  4. Turns out lights and leaves area ready for occupancy; replaces light bulbs and occasionally uses ladders of various heights; empties waste baskets and disposes of trash; picks up recycling.
  5. Moves furniture and office equipment setting room in order and is assigned general security of the building in which they work. Arranges and rearranges office space, conference rooms, training centers and auditoriums.    

When assigned to the Juvenile Justice Center, incumbents will perform the general Janitor, Detention Facilities duties, as well as the following:

  1. On the court side, maintains clean and orderly administration office areas and entry hallways.
  2. On the detention side, maintains the cleanliness of the housing units by cleaning and sanitizing showers and decontaminating holding cells.
  3. Ensures the kitchen area is clean and the appliances are turned off.  

When assigned to Santa Rita Jail, incumbents will perform the general Janitor, Detention Facilities duties, as well as the following:

  1. Cleans and sanitizes holding cells in ITR (Intake, Transfer and Release).
  2. Details cleaning the infirmary and clinic (e.g., holding cells, dialysis room, trauma room, nurse stations, medical interview rooms).
  3. Maintains the cleanliness of the housing units by cleaning and sanitizing the deputy offices, sick call rooms and control towers.




The equivalent of six months of full-time experience in the class of Janitor in the Alameda County classified service.



The equivalent of one (1) year of full-time janitorial experience in offices or an institution.    


Some positions may require a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.  

Special Requirement:  

Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.  

May be assigned to work day, evening, night and rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.  

NOTE:    The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.


NOTE:  The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.  

Knowledge of:

  • Modern janitorial methods, materials and equipment, soaps, detergents, disinfectants, cleaning compounds, and pressure washers.
  • Safety measures necessary in a secured facility.  

Ability to:

  • Communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Perform repetitive tasks with limited or no on-site supervision.
  • Prioritize.
  • Work effectively and safely with a wide variety of people in a high security environment, which may or may not include the presence of inmates.
  • Correctly and safely use janitorial materials, products and equipment.
  • Lift and move items up to 50 pounds.
  • Learn basic computer skills.
