DESCRIPTION
Under direction, subject to review by supervisory staff, to lead (direct, prioritize, coordinate, and review the work of) janitors, instruct janitors and perform janitorial work in a County facility and to do related work as required.


DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This class is distinguished from the class of Janitor Supervisor I in that the latter class represents the first level of full supervision in the janitorial class series. Janitor Supervisors do not themselves normally perform janitorial work but devote full time to supervisory duties. Lead Janitors perform janitorial work as a part of their regular duties in addition to performing lead functions, as defined above, with respect to Janitors.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Lead the work of a group of Janitors.

2. Give on-the-job instruction to Janitors, maintain standards of work performance and review the work of Janitors.

3. Requisition and maintain a stock of janitorial supplies, keeping necessary records.

4. Report to supervisory staff on building conditions, especially those requiring other than janitorial attention.

5. Perform all duties typical of the Janitor class in personally cleaning an assigned area of limited size.

6. Act as the main point of contact with client departments in buildings which require special support or are remote from the Janitor Supervisor (i.e., the Alameda County Conference Center, Fremont Hall of Justice, County Administration Building, Lakeside Plaza Building).

7. Coordinate special services for operating departments, including, but not limited to, setting up conference rooms and special cleaning details.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of two years of full-time experience as a Janitor in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of three years of full-time janitorial experience in offices or an institution.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to the duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Modern janitorial methods, safety practices and materials and equipment, including the safe use of power-driven waxing and buffing machines, detergents, soaps, waxes and cleaning compounds.

Ability to:

• Lead the work of others and instruct janitors in janitorial methods and safe practices.
• Keep required records.
• Follow written and oral instructions.
• Work harmoniously with operating personnel in cleaning or arranging for the cleaning of work areas.
