Under direction, to provide professional dental services in various County departments; and to do other related work as required.


Dentists provide dental services on a part-time or intermittent basis to patients at various County clinics or detention facilities. This class is distinguished from the class of staff dentist in that the latter provides dental services on a full-time basis.

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Performs oral examinations at various County clinics, detention facilities or the Crippled Children's Services of the Health Department; interprets X-Rays; treats mouth diseases; performs prophylactic procedures, restorations, and other treatment as needed; takes impressions, orders dentures and fits and adjusts dentures; instructs patients in oral hygiene and dental care.

2. Performs emergency procedures on Sheriff's prisoners in order to reduce or eliminate immediate pain; refers prisoners for needed dental care to the regularly scheduled Staff Dentist for treatment.

3. Performs dental evaluations on all juveniles placed in the Probation Department's detention facilities; performs all needed care on juvenile whose guardians are covered by an aid program and informs responsible guardians of dental care which must be given juveniles through private dentists.


Possession of a valid license to practice dentistry in California.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of modern dentistry and oral surgery.
• County dental programs and services.

Ability to:

• Conduct a course of dental treatment for patients; instruct patients and County staff in oral hygiene and dental care.
• Maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and other personnel
