Summary

CMPD now offers three distinct Academy Tracks for interested applicants. Please read each posting carefully and ensure you apply for the correct position.

Applicants applying for Intermediate Police Trainee must have completed a North Carolina (NC) Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program within the past 12 months OR currently possess an active NC Law Enforcement Certification issued by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and not currently meet the qualifications for our Lateral Police Trainee position.

Note: This program is not available to applicants with out of state certification.

Selected Intermediate applicants must successfully complete a 10 week Academy, followed by a 15 week PTO training course. With the addition of this training course, qualified applicants who have already successfully completed a BLET program will no longer be required to complete the full 26 week academy and repeat BLET.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Possess essential skills related to written & oral communication, critical thinking, and problem solving/analytical skills
  • Ability to work with diverse community
  • Complete reports and provide testimony in court
  • Work with community leaders and members on crime reduction projects
  • Assist in developing crime reduction programs upon becoming a Police Officer
  • Perform other duties as assigned

ADA and Other Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Minimum Qualifications

Have completed a NC BLET course within the past 12 months (Applicants currently enrolled in BLET are also eligible) OR

Currently possess an active law enforcement certification issued by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and do not meet the qualifications for our Lateral Police Trainee position.

Current Law Enforcement Officers with at least two years of full-time sworn experience with a municipal or state agency that answers 911 calls for service and has comparable duties to CMPD should complete an application under Lateral Police Trainee.

Salary

  • Entry level pay starts at $57,192
    • 5% incentive for Associate's degree
    • 10% incentive for Bachelor's degree

Conditions of Employment

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
