Introduction

This is an entry level traffic control work bargaining unit position.

Nature Of Work

An employee in this class is responsible for participating in constructing and rebuilding traffic signal control equipment at intersections. Under immediate supervision, employees perform tasks, at times under hazardous conditions, which are of routine difficulty requiring exercise of limited initiative and independent judgment. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion through inspection, observation, and results obtained. 

Examples of Duties

Participates in constructing and rebuilding traffic signal control equipment at intersections; places, repairs and adjusts span wires; connects and disconnects signal wire cables; installs and connects traffic signal control devices to wooden and concrete poles; builds concrete foundations; builds and mounts signal lights; installs communication cables, feeders and loops.

Installs above and underground conduit systems and pull boxes; installs signal head/pedestrian head wiring and hardware to ensure proper operation of equipment; constructs pedestrian cross walk systems to ensure pedestrian safety; assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs, barricades and cones as required for work zone safety; installs traffic controllers, cabinets, signal heads, signal cables, lines between adjacent controllers and push buttons.

Enforces proper safety practices and/or rules and regulations in order to prevent hazardous conditions and to protect self, other employees and the public from harm or injury.

Troubleshoots and field repairs traffic signal control systems, cabinets and wiring including communications cable to keep equipment in proper condition.

Transports people, materials, tools, and equipment to and from sites; drives and operates aerial lift platform, bucket trucks, and light automotive equipment.

Ensures that daily equipment checks are completed; manually loads and unloads heavy items, including supplies, equipment, and materials; cleans and maintains traffic signals and pedestrian heads for proper indicators.

Ability to perform utility locating tasks reading as-built construction plans and using equipment for identifying underground utilities.  

Performs related work as required. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Some knowledge of: methods, practices, techniques, material, tools, and equipment pertinent to general electrical maintenance and repair work; occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.

Ability to: read and work from plans and schematics; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; follow oral and written instructions; perform duties requiring physical strength, out-of-doors and in inclement weather.

Skill in: use and care of electrical maintenance and repair tools and equipment. 

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school with six (6) months of experience in general electrical, mechanical, construction or electronic equipment maintenance and repair work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid Florida Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class “B” with Air Brakes.

Possession of Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (IMOT) certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months. 

Possession of International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Level I certification or the ability to obtain within 18 months.   

Examination

Evaluation of education and experience. Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

Comments

Employees may be required to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed.

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
