Medical Transriber II (#RO4102)
DEFINITIONUnder immediate supervision, supervises the transcription of medical reports from mechanical dictating equipment; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules. CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is the highest level in the medical transcriber series. Incumbents are primarily responsible for supervising and training unit personnel and ensuring efficient operation of the transcription unit. TYPICAL DUTIESAssigns, reviews and evaluates the work of unit personnel; assists in interpretation of difficult dictation; arranges work schedules to provide coverage for two shifts.
Trains staff in medical definitions, proper uses and spelling of medical terms, format and procedures used in medical reports and basic anatomy; prepares training aids; updates training materials.
Confers with physicians and other professional staff regarding errors, omissions, discrepancies or delinquencies.
Composes and types letters, transcribes the more complex medical reports and records; types minutes of meetings, letters and other records.
Maintains logs of completed work, personnel reports and records for unit, inventory records and other unit records.
Interviews applicants for vacant positions; administers and evaluates transcribing test.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSExperience: Three years of progressively responsible experience in skilled typewriting, one year of which must have included transcribing medical reports and records at the journey level in an accredited hospital. Certificate: Possession of a valid typing certificate for 50 words per minute. KNOWLEDGEA wide variety of medical terminology, anatomy, and related terms; the correct use of English grammar and punctuation; current office practices and procedures; various methods of instruction and the use of training aids. ABILITYMake decisions in accordance with hospital policies, rules and regulations; assign, supervise and review the work of other medical transcribers; establish and maintain records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional and nonprofessional staff.
