Medical Transcriber Trainee (#RO4100)
DEFINITIONUnder immediate supervision, learns to transcribe medical reports from computerized dictating systems; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules. CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis is the entry level in the medical transcriber series. Incumbents' work is subject to close review while in progress and upon completion. Incumbents are being trained to type a variety of medical reports and are required to learn a variety of specialized typing formats, varied specialized medical terminology and to transcribe reports dictated by a wide variety of individuals with varied speaking speeds. TYPICAL DUTIESTranscribes history and physical examinations, consultations, operation reports, x-ray reports, pathology reports, pulmonary function evaluations, clinic evaluations, final summaries, protocols for conferences, letters and other dictation of medical staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSExperience: One year of office clerical work requiring typing. License and Certificates: Possession of a valid typing certificate for 45 words per minute. KNOWLEDGEBasic public relations procedures; basic filing systems; language mechanics and basic phonics; principles of good compositions; computerized word processing programs; how to use dictionaries and other standard resources. ABILITYFollow oral and written directions; learn office procedures quickly; read and understand job related material; work well and communicate with others; work accurately and systematically; handle stressful situations and work well under pressure; write legibly; match names and numbers. PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTSMobility-Operation of keyboard; sits for long periods; occasional walking, pushing/pulling, bending/squatting; Lifting-Occasionally lifts 5 to 30 pounds; Visual-Constant use of color perception, hand/eye coordination, depth perception, reading/close-up work, and peripheral field of vision; Dexterity-Constant holding, reaching, grasping, repetitive motion and occasional writing; Hearing/Talking-Constant hearing of normal speech, hearing on the telephone, hearing faint sounds; occasional talking in person and on the telephone. Emotional/Psychological-Occasionally deals with emergency situations; exposure to trauma, grief and death on an occasional basis; occasional public contact; concentrate to transcribe dictation; frequently work alone; and occasionally work nights, weekends and overtime; Environmental Conditions-Exposure to noise.
