Darkroom Technician (#RH5900)



DEFINITION

Under supervision, develops and processes x-ray film on a production basis; mixes photographic solution; maintains darkroom equipment and supplies; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An employee in this class works in the San Joaquin General Hospital Radiology Division darkroom and is required to perform a full range of x-ray film processing duties.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Operates an automatic mechanical film-processing unit to develop, fix and dry x-ray films on a large volume basis.
  • Checks solution temperatures and adjusts developing time.
  • Checks processed film for contrast, cloudiness and general quality.
  • Loads film cassettes and maintains a supply of film, chemicals and other equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains processing apparatus, water tank, and film holders and maintains darkroom in an orderly condition.
  • Makes duplications and subtractions of x-ray films.
  • May train radiologic technology students in darkroom film processing techniques.
  • May keep records and prepare simple reports.
  • Operates cine processor for 35-millimeter heart catheterization films.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: Six months of experience or training in processing x-ray film on a production basis in an acute care hospital.

    Substitution: One year of film processing experience or training in a photographic laboratory may be substituted for the required experience.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Elements of photographic processes as applied to x-ray work; photographic chemicals and equipment.

    ABILITY

    Mix chemical solutions; perform routine x-ray equipment repairs and adjustments; learn to recognize processing defects in x-ray film; understand and follow oral and written directions in exact detail; train others in film processing techniques; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
