DEFINITION

Upon general direction, manages nursing orientation, competency training, and continuing education programs at San Joaquin General Hospital; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Civil Service Rule 3, Section 3.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent of this single position class is responsible for planning and coordinating nursing orientation of sufficient scope and duration to inform new nurses and their employees of their responsibilities; coordinates nursing competency programs in conjunction with Nursing Department Managers and others; and assures provision of continuing education courses to maintain and improve the skills of all hospital nursing personnel. Direction is received from the Director of Nursing or designee.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Plans, coordinates, implements registered nurse, licensed vocational nurse, and other new employee orientation programs including information on policies, procedures, performance expectations, infection control program, quality assessment and improvement activities and plant, technology, and safety management programs.
  • Selects, assigns, supervises, and evaluates subordinate staff.
  • Provides and participates in training of hospital nursing and other staff in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other lifesaving interventions.
  • Participates in the planning and provision of required annual training of hospital staff in awareness and prevention of tuberculosis and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Provides programs to ensure that nursing staff is trained in the effective and safe use of equipment used in their activities.
  • Prepares, administers, and monitors budget for the Nursing Education Department; generates revenue by charging registration fees to outside participants in selected educational programs.
  • Prepares written reports and correspondence; plans meeting agendas; maintains minutes and files on Emergency Medical Services and other related meetings; speaks before groups; may disseminate information on Emergency Medical Service programs to the public.
  • Implements continuing education courses to remain in compliance with regulations; applies for continuing education credits through the State Board of Registered Nursing as appropriate.
  • Maintains computerized and other records; prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Develops, collects and maintains instructional materials; works with Staff Development Department to ensure safe and adequate inventory of audio-visual equipment and supplies; maintains references related to education, instructional design, course development and teaching/learning principles.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.

Experience: Three years of experience as a clinical nursing instructor in an acute care facility.

Substitution: A Master's Degree in Nursing or related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

License: Current registration as a nurse in the State of California.

KNOWLEDGE

Professional nursing theory and techniques; current trends and developments in the practice of nursing; goals of patient care; basic principles of management and supervision; clinical education techniques; quality assessment and improvement; techniques of education needs assessments; hospital safety principles and practices; continuing education requirements for nursing staff; audio visual equipment and use; management information systems.

ABILITY

Plan, coordinate, and implement clinical education programs for nursing staff; assign, supervise and evaluate subordinate staff; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; operate audio-visual and related equipment; maintain computerized records; communicate effectively, orally and in writing; speak before groups; effectively represent the hospital and the Nursing Department to outside agencies and individuals; effectively prepare, manage and monitor budgets.
