DEFINITION

Under general supervision performs laundry work of average difficulty in the operation of San Joaquin General Hospital Laundry; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the laundry worker series. An incumbent in this class is responsible for operating washers, drying tumbler, spreaders and flatwork ironer.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Shakes out and sorts soiled laundry for washing; shakes out wet flat work and rough dry work after washing.
  • Operates washer-extractors, loads with soiled linen and other laundry; monitors and maintains flow and supply of detergent, bleach, softener, neutralizers and liquid seal; unloads washers.
  • Operates dryers; sets timer and cooling cycle on dryers.
  • Operates steam tunnels in pressing uniforms, jackets, operating gowns, coats, trousers, shirts and other articles.
  • Operates automatic folder; runs damp flat work through spreader and flat work ironer; finish folds flat work from flat work ironer.
  • Operates small piece folder; finish-folds rough dry work.
  • Sorts, counts and stacks clean laundry; loads laundry carts according to linen orders.
  • Assembles, folds, and wraps surgery, obstetric and pediatric linen packs; inspects for damaged or worn items; inserts indicator in each pack for sterilization process.
  • Assists in the loading, unloading and distribution of soiled and cleaned laundry and linens.
  • Maintains simple records as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  Six months of work involving cleaning, laundry, routine maintenance or other kinds of manual labor.

License: Possession of valid California driver’s license.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic safety principles and practices.

ABILITY

Read, write and understand English; operate heavy duty washers, tumbler dryers and operate steam tunnels; pick up and deliver laundry from and to various locations; understand and follow oral and written instructions; keep routine records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift and move heavy loads or objects; work in a warm humid environment

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Mobility - Frequent operation of heavy duty laundry equipment; occasionally standing, walking, crawling, bending/squatting, and stairs; frequent driving and sitting may be required; Lifting - occasionally lifting 5 to 70 pounds; Vision - frequent hand-eye coordination, depth perception, reading and close-up work; Dexterity - normal dexterity with occasional writing; Hearing/Talking - constant hearing and talking on the telephone/radio and in person; Emotional/Psychological - constant public contact and decision making with frequent concentration required; Special Requirements - may occasionally work weekends/nights/overtime; may be required to travel; Environmental Conditions - occasional exposure to noise and occasional exposure to hazardous materials, dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation and changing indoor/outdoor conditions.
