DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision, learns to operate a departmental stores unit; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

An incumbent of this class works under close supervision of designated department management staff and learns to operate a small stores unit or one which is non-technical. As experience is gained, more independence is expected until the incumbent can function under general supervision as a Storekeeper I.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Checks incoming deliveries to determine if any are damaged, if the quantities are correct and if the quality meets specifications.
  • Learns to store supplies, observing specific temperature, humidity and light requirements; learns to develop storage methods; allocates storage space.
  • Issues supplies; fills orders and requisitions; monitors supplies to ensure use before expiration date; delivers supplies.
  • Learns to maintain inventory records indicating quantity on hand, maximum and minimum stock levels and usage dates; learns to post records of items received and issued; prepares reports and correspondence.
  • Learns to prepare purchase orders for supplies; ensures that sufficient stock is available for normal operations; obtains information from catalogs and manuals.
  • Investigates complaints regarding quantity or quality of goods received.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:  One year of work experience that would provide familiarity with commodity control procedures.

License Possession of a valid California driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE

Basic storekeeping methods and procedures; basic mathematics; general procedures used in maintaining inventory records; safe methods of lifting heavy objects and performing manual tasks.

ABILITY

Read and understand job-related material; work with others; lift and move heavy objects.
