DEFINITION

Under immediate supervision services vehicles with gasoline, oil, water, and air; dispatches pool vehicles to County employees; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is a one-position class in the Department of Public Works. The incumbent is assigned duties at the downtown motor pool. This class differs from that of Motor Pool Dispatcher in that an incumbent of the latter class is responsible for the daily operations of the downtown motor pool garage.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Services automobiles and other light automotive equipment with gasoline, oil, water, and air; checks and add water to batteries; charges batteries when necessary; adds water to windshield washer tanks and does other routine servicing; makes routine inspection of vehicles to ascertain damage or mechanical faults.
  • Assigns motor pool vehicles requested by authorized personnel; parks vehicles not in use.
  • Prepares records of quantities of gas and oil supplied, mileage of vehicles not in use.
  • Maintains garage restrooms and does other routine janitorial tasks.
  • May deliver vehicles to and from repair shop.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

License and Certificates: Possession of a valid California driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE

California Vehicle Code as it applies to traffic rules and regulations; tools and equipment related to routine servicing of vehicles.

ABILITY

Learn to perform routine servicing of automobile with gas, oil, water, and air; follow oral and written instructions; maintain routine records; use tact and courtesy with users of motor pool vehicles; park vehicle in small spaces; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
