Airport Maintenance Worker (#RC0505)



DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs work in the routine care and maintenance of Airport grounds; performs semi-skilled maintenance and equipment operation tasks in the repair and maintenance of pavement and airport runways; performs building maintenance and repair work; and does related or other work as required in accordance with Rule 3, Section 3 of the Civil Service Rules.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first level in the Airport Maintenance series. An employee in this class performs a wide variety of grounds maintenance work and performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks and assists in more complex tasks related to building construction, installation, alteration, road and runway repair, maintenance and repair at Stockton Metropolitan Airport. As employees in this class gain experience and skills, they independently perform semi-skilled work.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Plants and maintains airport lawns, shrubs, trees, and other plants; seeds, mows and rakes airport lawns; may install sprinkler systems.
  • Mixes and applies a variety of herbicides and pesticides for week, insect and rodent control.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of ground maintenance equipment and tools including sprayers, mowers, tractors, fertilizers, and aerators; maintains and operates the vacuum sweeper for runway and taxiway maintenance.
  • Operate a variety of road construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoes, rollers, compactors and jackhammers.
  • May perform semi-skilled painting, glazing, carpentry, plastering, locksmithing, masonry, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, heating and ventilating, and related maintenance trades work.
  • May assist in pouring concrete, hanging doors, installing floors; installing partitions and drop ceilings; repairing door closures furniture and roofing.
  • May install airport runway and taxiway lighting and perimeter lighting; installs gates and navigational equipment for airport traffic; repair of concrete and asphalt; maintain directional taxiway signs for aircraft and other airport traffic.
  • Requisitions supplies for ground maintenance, buildings, equipment and airfield maintenance.
  • May assist in the enforcement of airport security rules and regulations.
  • May supervise others as assigned.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience: One year of maintaining, repairing and construction park grounds, facilities, commercial landscaping. 


    AND

    Experience:  Three years of semi-skilled experience in carpentry, plumbing, or electrical.

     

    Special Requirement: Possession of a Qualified Applicator Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Food and Agriculture at time of hire or within one year from the date of appointment.


    AND

    License:  Possession of a valid California driver’s license.

    KNOWLEDGE

    Propagating, planting, cultivating, pruning, fertilizing, and related care of plants, shrubs, flowers and lawns; methods, tools, materials and practices used in treating plants for fungi, insects and parasites; methods, materials, tools and practices used in grounds maintenance; standard methods, practices, tools and materials used in the building maintenance trades; occupational hazards and safety precautions; general airport operation.

    ABILITY

    Distinguish common varieties of plants in varying stages of growth; follow oral and written instructions; keep simple records; operate and maintain hand tools and other equipment as needed; operate road repair and maintenance equipment as needed.

    PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

    Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time; ability to bend, stoop, and reach overhead; employees may be required to lift and carry materials and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds; position requires the handling of hazardous materials and ability to work effectively during emergency situations.
