Definition
Under direction, the Train Controller monitors and controls the movement of light rail vehicles in the subway using the computerized Advanced Train Control System (ATCS) and various communication systems.
Distinguishing Features
Train Controller is an advanced journey level professional job code responsible for monitoring and controlling the movement of trains through the subway system. This job code is distinguished from the Transit Operation Specialist job code by the latter's typical responsibility as a supervisor.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties
According to Civil Service Commission Rule 409, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job code and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Monitors train/surface-subway operations and makes adjustments to train services in a safe and timely manner; performs constant visual monitoring of trains on video display monitors and communicates by radio and telephone with various personnel.
2. Coordinates appropriate personnel and equipment to resolve breakdowns, safety issues and other service disruptions within the shortest possible time frame; communicates with management and senior management regarding these problems.
3. Takes appropriate action on communication received from operators, inspectors, station agents and other personnel regarding emergencies, incidents, and malfunctions; dispatches appropriate personnel and equipment to correct possible service disruption or safety problems.
4. Handles system failure of the computerized train control system and various pieces of related equipment.
5. Controls trains in subway via computer console; identifies problems through the use of computer read outs.
6. Communicates with departmental personnel regarding missed runs, line delays etc. for follow up resolution.
7. Prepares and maintains reports and records of all activities on the Muni metro system.
8. Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of: subway transit operations, specifically the technical knowledge of the major functions of Central Control and the subway transit system; local, state and federal regulations concerning the operations of the subway system; the computerized train control system(ATCS); public transit revenue and service activities, rail and central control operations, and principles and practices of ATCS; applicable federal and state safety rules related to train and subway operations; and the principles and practices related to transit operations, including handling emergencies and ensuring transit vehicle passenger safety to maintain a safe work environment.
Ability to: identify problems and their causes and the steps necessary to solve them; assess the relative impact of various solutions to a problem, and the ability to break complex problems into components that are amenable to analysis; anticipate and be proactive rather than be reactive to problems; set priorities, coordinate tasks and work independently; take steps to alleviate problems without being told and being a self-starter; speak clearly and effectively, to articulate and provide directions and/or orders to others regarding operational issues, and to verbally summarize information and explain work-related information; listen attentively to others, comprehend written materials, and elicit information; read and comprehend written materials, prepare documents in a clear and understandable manner; maintain accurate documentation and records, and provide information and/or direction.
Experience and Training
Experience:
1. Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that of a Transit Supervisor at the Metro Rail Division of the San Francisco Municipal Railway responsible for the movement of Light Rail Vehicles; OR
2. Two (2) years of experience equivalent to that of a Transit Operator operating Light Rail Vehicles and two (2) years of experience equivalent to that of a Transit Supervisor with the San Francisco Municipal Railway. OR
3. Three (3) years of experience equivalent to that of a Transit Supervisor with the San Francisco Municipal Railway.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Nature of work requires working in a confined and highly stressful environment; sitting for extended periods of time; constantly viewing display monitors; and working rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. In addition, employees may wear headsets.

Disaster Service Workers
