According to Civil Service Commission Rule 9, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to 7454 Traffic Signal Operator and are not intended to be an inclusive list.
1. Operates signal system to control the flow of cable car traffic at intersections by applying repetitive manual pressure to signal buttons.
2. Controls movement of cable cars with a flag when signal malfunctions and/or when operator's view is obstructed by traffic.
3. Occasionally assists pedestrians in crossing streets safely.
4. Confirms traffic delays and accidents to Muni central control by telephone.
5. Provides information to the general public including tourists, on how to get to sites within the City.
6. Performs related duties as required.
Knowledge of: rules and regulations governing pedestrian, auto and cable car traffic; safety rules and regulations necessary to foresee and resolve potentially dangerous situations.
Ability to: operate a signal system; communicate clearly and effectively with departmental staff, the public and emergency services personnel; create and maintain harmonious working relationships with coworkers, other City employees and the public.
Skills to: repetitively operate the signal buttons.
1. Six months (1000hrs.) work experience directing traffic; OR
2. One year (2000hrs.) work experience that included driving a vehicle; AND
3. Ability to pass color discernment test
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential duties require: normal hearing, freedom from color and night blindness, dexterity of the fingers, alertness at all times while on the job, application of simple repetitive manual skill in the operation of a signal system; ability to sit and work alone in a small space; and working in inclement weather.
