Definition

Under general supervision, performs highly skilled work in connection with the tuning, repair and overhaul of pianos at the San Francisco Unified School District.

Distinguishing Features

This is a journey-level class, with responsibility for performing highly skilled work in connection with the tuning, repair and overhaul of pianos.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the duties assigned to this class and are not intended to be an inclusive list.

1. Tunes a variety of pianos utilizing standard tuning methods, by determining the tonal quality and accurate pitch and analyzing faults and taking appropriate corrective action.

2. Assesses condition and makes major and minor repairs to pianos, including repairing and replacing strings, hammers, stops, sounding boards, installing locks, hasps, regulating pedals, tightening key actions, leveling keys, regulating tones and related internal parts.

3. Determines condition and acceptability of pianos being offered as donations to schools.

4. Maintains inventory of parts and tools necessary for repairs.

5. Maintains files of piano locations, conditions and work performed.

6. Schedules maintenance and tuning visits to various schools.

7. Responds to on-calls and emergency piano repairs.

8. Drives a motor vehicle to site visits.

9. Processes bills and generates expense reports regarding piano charges and repairs; prepares routine time, materials and work performed reports.

10. Supervises professional movement of pianos to and from school sites.

11. Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: principles, practices, methods and techniques utilized in piano tuning, maintenance and rebuilding; proper use and care of piano tuning and repair tools.

Skill to: assess the condition of pianos and use appropriate tools to tune, repair and rebuild pianos.

Ability to: determine tonal quality and accurate pitch in order to analyze faults and take corrective action; effectively prioritize and schedule workload and respond to urgent requests for service; maintain accurate records;  maintain adequate inventory of  supplies and equipment; deal courteously and effectively and maintain effective work relationships with teachers, parents, students, principals, site managers and administrators;  speak clearly and effectively in order to convey work related information.
 

Experience and Training

Three (3) years of verifiable journey-level experience in the tuning, repair and overhaul of pianos.

License or Certificate

Possession of a valid California driver license.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
