Definition

Under general direction, plans, organizes and coordinates all pre-construction activities on school building construction projects; represents the School District in selecting qualified architects and engineers for specific projects; and performs related duties as required.

Requires responsibility for: Coordinating and developing methods and procedures and executing policy relating to all pre-construction activities on school building projects; making regular responsible contact with school administrators, community representatives, teachers, architects and engineers during pre-construction phases of all building projects; works with Bureau of Architecture in the preparation of architects' contracts, bid specifications and documents and cost estimates on individual school construction projects.

Distinguishing Features

The School Architectural Coordinator is responsible for coordinating all activities and schedules in order that any specific project can move as quickly as possible from the time the project architect is assigned until the time the project is let out to bid.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties

1. Plans and coordinates all pre-construction activities for school building projects including the selection and qualifications of architects, engineers and contractors and the coordination of architect selection activities.

2. Provides guidance to architects and engineers during the pre-construction phases of building projects; reports periodically on progress of all building projects during the pre-construction stage.

3. Develops and maintains pre-construction project schedules on overall school building projects.

4. Works with Bureau of Architecture in preparation of architects' contracts bid specifications and documents and construction contracts; analyzes bids and recommends contract awards.

5. Schedules and participates in meetings with school administrators, community representatives, teachers and architects during pre-construction phases of all building projects.

6. Coordinates the pre-bid conferences for review and approval of preliminary and final working drawings.

7. Works with the Bureau of Architecture in the preparation of cost estimates on school construction projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Requires considerable knowledge of architectural and engineering techniques, theory, and practices and architectural design.

Ability to Deal effectively with architects, engineers, teachers, school administrators, community groups and other departmental personnel in the planning and coordinating of pre-construction activities on school building projects; prepare technical and professional reports; exercise sound professional judgment and a high degree of analytical ability.

Experience and Training

Requires graduation from college with a baccalaureate degree in architecture or engineering and four years of progressively responsible architectural or engineering experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

License or Certificate

Requires registration as a licensed architect in the State of Calif. When appointed to Disaster Corps, requires license as Fallout Shelter Analyst.

Disaster Service Workers

All City and County of San Francisco employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the City requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
