DEFINITION

To perform a variety of custodial duties to maintain the cleanliness and orderliness of assigned rooms, buildings and related County facilities; and to perform facility use coordination duties.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced journey level class in the Custodian series.  Employees within this class are distinguished from the Custodian II by the performance of facility use coordination duties.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from a Supervising Custodian and/or management and supervisory staff.

Exercises technical and functional supervision over custodial staff.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Train and lead assigned custodial staff.
  • Perform facility use coordination duties such as scheduling facility use, maintaining usage calendar, responding to public inquiries, and accepting and receipting fees. 
  • Sweep, mop, wax, buff and scrub floors; vacuum and clean carpets; clean restrooms; empty and clean waste receptacles.
  • Dust, wax, wash and polish furniture and woodwork; wash windows, walls, and blinds; polish metal work.
  • Clean and dust books and shelves; move and arrange furniture and equipment.
  • Perform minor building maintenance or repairs on custodial related equipment.
  • Inspect buildings for safety, fire and sanitary hazards.
  • Operate a variety of electrical cleaning equipment; maintain custodial equipment and supplies.
  • Unlock and lock entrances to buildings; check buildings for security.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other County employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is typically performed in indoor and outdoor environments with variable temperature conditions. May require travel to and from other locations in a variety of outdoor weather conditions. Depending on area of assignment, additional background clearance with the Department of Justice (DOJ) may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience and Training
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of responsible custodial experience performing duties similar to a Custodian II with Placer County.

Training: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.

Required License or Certificate: 
May need to possess a valid driver's license as required by the position.  Proof of adequate vehicle insurance and medical clearance may also be required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls and fixtures.
  • Cleaning materials and disinfectants, equipment and tools used in custodial work.
  • Arithmetic and basic mathematical calculations.
  • Principles and practices of work safety.

Ability to:

  • On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify safety hazards; identify and locate supplies and equipment; identify and locate cleaning and maintenance issues; interpret work assignments; remember tasks and daily assignments; and explain cleaning and maintenance issues to others.
  • Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports and work papers; stand, walk, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist  while performing cleaning or general facility maintenance activities; use telephone and make written record entries; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; regularly lift very heavy weight.
  • Train, assign, and review the work of assigned maintenance staff.
  • Learn Placer County Internal Control Manual and cash control policies and procedures.
  • Maintain calendars, logs, schedules, and related facilities use records.
  • Make simple mathematical calculations.
  • Use a variety of equipment, materials, and tools, including electrical cleaning equipment, required in custodial and minor maintenance work.
  • Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.
  • Perform heavy manual work.
  • Work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.
  • Act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Obtain information through interview and to deal fairly and courteously with the public.
  • Work assigned shifts.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Length of Probation:

All permanent appointments from open eligible lists to positions in the classified service shall serve a probationary period of twelve (12) calendar months or two thousand eighty (2,080) hours, whichever is more.
