Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to receive emergency and non-emergency telephone calls from the public to the Montgomery Emergency Communications Center (ECC) using a highly specialized computer telephony system and software application and enter data received into a computerized dispatch system to assist dispatcher(s) with emergency response. 

The essential functions include processing emergencies; initiating and performing Emergency Medical Dispatch; query, enter and receive critical law enforcement information using local, state and national level database systems and performing department administrative/clerical duties.  ECOIs report directly to a Public Safety Communications Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.  Applicants must have completed a data entry operations course at a technical institute or 6 months of experience as a data entry operator, telephone operator, or a receptionist type position receiving and/or transmitting telephone, radio or alarm system calls.

Special Requirements

As a condition of continued employment, you must pass a background check and drug test.  Must be willing to respond to the Emergency Communications Center when requested for man-made and natural disasters that could include working irregular hours, weekends, holidays and evenings.  Employee must obtain and maintain certification for APCO Emergency Medical Dispatcher and NCIC.  Must be 18 years old.

Kind of Examination

Applications are being accepted to fill one (1) vacancy and any vacancies that may occur during the life of the register. The current vacancy is with the City of Montgomery Communications Department.  Applicants will be screened and qualified based on the education and experience on the application and attached supplemental questionnaire. If more than five (5) qualified applications are received, applicants will be asked to come in for a computerized skills test. The skills test will be used to rank the top candidates. If there are five or less qualified applicants, they will be considered equally qualified and placed on the register in alphabetical order.
