Nature of Work

The Zoo Director is responsible for managing the direction of the Montgomery Zoo. This is responsible administrative and management work in planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling the operations and maintenance of a municipal zoo, its employees, animals, facilities and in providing zoo patrons a safe and clean environment. Major duties include developing, implementing and enforcing policies and procedures for overall zoo administration and generally overseeing all zoo activities. The Zoo Director directly supervises the Deputy Zoo Director, the Assistant Zoo Director and Administration; and reports directly to the Director of Leisure Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Must have at least eight (8) years of experience working in a zoo which must include at least three (3) years of progressive experience in an upper management position in charge of zoo programs and operations. Education from an accredited college or university in Zoology, Biology, Business Management, or a closely related field may substitute for experience on a year for year basis. (Example:  A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Zoology, Biology, Business Management or a closely related field will substitute for four (4) of the eight (8) years of required experience.)

Special Requirements

Must be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays and willing to be on call to respond to emergency incidents as needed.
