Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to provide care to marine life, reptiles and animals housed in the Montgomery Zoo Stingray exhibit. The work responsibilities of this position are: observes aquatic and reptile collections and exhibits on a routine basis, maintains animal exhibits, feeds animals, trains Zookeeper Is, and performing to departmental administrative duties. The Zookeeper II (Marine Life/Reptiles) is distinguished from the Zookeeper I in that the Zookeeper II is responsible for this specific section of the zoo and is required to have specialized aquatic and reptilian knowledge of the animals in this section, whereas the Zookeeper I may rotate among the different sections of the zoo. The Marine Life/Reptiles Zookeeper II assigns work responsibilities to Zookeeper I. Incumbents receive direct supervision from the Assistant Animal Care Manager, the Conservation & Enrichment Manager, and/or Animal Care Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and two (2) years of paid professional experience working with marine life and reptiles in a zoo, wildlife preserve, circus, ranch, or similar setting.

Note:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

  


Special Requirements

Must be willing to work with venomous Stingrays and a diverse and potentially venomous reptile collection such as snakes, turtles, lizards, frogs etc. Must be able to tolerate working under difficult conditions to include extreme heat or cold, meet deadlines as needed to care for marine life, reptiles and animal collections, and maintain exhibits. Must be willing to add salt to aquatic tanks to obtain optimum pH balance. Must be able to stoop, climb, walk, run, and crawl.  Must be able to lift heavy objects such as food bundles or food bags weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted. Must be able to work weekends and holidays.  Must have and maintain a valid Alabama Driver’s license and an insurable driving record in order to drive city vehicles to pick up various produce and food items.  Candidates will be subject to a medical exam following a conditional job offer.
