Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is teach cheer and/or gymnastics. Although incumbents may initially be assigned to specific teams/programs, these assignments may change as the needs of the facility change. The primary work responsibilities for this position are: assists and/or coaches boys and/or girls gymnastics and/ or cheer, develops, monitors and observes other instructors using informational sources; oversees assigned team gymnastic and/or cheer programs for competition; coordinates coaches’ travel to competitions, pro-seminars/training, and performances; and teaches beginning and intermediate recreational classes using necessary equipment following safety regulations. The Recreation Leader I differs from the Recreation Leader II in that the II level is responsible for more advanced training and development of gymnastics/cheer skills and assists the Gymnastics Supervisor with facility operations while the I level is responsible for the training and development of beginning and intermediate skills and of staff. Incumbents work as a team with other recreation leaders and special pay instructors who are all supervised by the Gymnastics Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and one (1) year of experience teaching and/or coaching competitive gymnastics and/or cheer.

NOTE: Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid Alabama driver’s license as needed to travel to meets. Must obtain and keep SafeSport certification current. Must be available to attend all program related competitions and performances which may include after hours and weekends.  Must be able to work irregular hours and on weekends for competitions and performances.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: This position requires; the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time, hand eye coordination, spotting and lifting athletes of various ages and sizes, and fine manipulation skills to perform recreation training, instruction, and coaching.
