The fundamental reason this classification
exists is to perform administrative work supervising the city-wide program of
athletics for the Parks and Recreation Department. The employee in this class is responsible for
the promotion and supervision of sports and athletic activities under the Parks
and Recreation Department’s jurisdiction, and directs the work of a number of full
and part-time employees directing athletic activities and organizing teams for
league competition. The work responsibilities include: directing and supervising
the Jr. High School Interscholastic Athletic Program; supervising two or more
full-time employees; inspecting the Municipal football stadium and baseball
fields; preparing and submitting the athletic budgetary requests, and monitoring
expenditures of allotted funds for Athletic Programs; and troubleshooting
problems. Work involves considerable
contact with Community Centers Director IIIs (Athletic Centers) in charge of
teams, leagues and specialized recreational activities. General plans and
activities are subject to periodic review by the Director and the Assistant
Director.
Bachelor’s
Degree in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Sports Management, or related
field and five (5) years’ experience in an organized community competitive
and/or recreational program, coaching one or more athletic sports, or athletic
facility management. Experience must
include two years of supervisory experience in sports management or athletics.
NOTE:
Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite
knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.
Must
possess a valid Alabama
driver’s license as needed to travel to various sites. Must be willing to work varying
and/or extended hours and holidays. Physical ability to work outdoors
while being exposed to inclement weather conditions such as heat, rain, and
cold.
