Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to supervise and direct the work of subordinates in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic control systems, street lighting, civil defense warning devices, and related cables and wiring.  Position incumbents serve as the technical expert for assigned subdivisions; therefore, the position requires technical competency, independent action, initiative, and judgment in the assigned area. Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either the Traffic Signal subdivision or the Street Lighting subdivision and perform the duties associated with that subdivision; however, all position incumbents are cross-trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed.  Work is received as a result of public complaints, work orders, inspections, or general improvement programs. Primary work responsibilities may include: overseeing and directing the work activities of the Traffic Signal and/or Street Light crews; supervising the Traffic Control Technician Is & IIs and/or the Street Lighting Technician Is & IIs; serving as technical expert in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electronic traffic signal and street lighting systems; assisting crews in the installation of traffic signals and/or street lights; documenting cost of all assigned jobs; ensuring adequate inventory levels of supplies and equipment; assisting in the intersection design process; and performing the duties of the Traffic Control Superintendent in the absence of the Traffic Control Superintendent. The Traffic Control Supervisors are under the general supervision of the Traffic Control Superintendent. 

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and four (4) years of experience working with traffic signal and/or street lighting systems to include two (2) years of field supervision experience (e.g., lead technician or crew foreman).  IMSA Level II certification is preferred.

Note:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

  


Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record.   Must have (or obtain within the six-month probationary period) a Commercial Driver’s License Class B (Airbrakes). Must be on emergency standby duty afterhours on a scheduled rotating basis.

WORK CONDITIONS:  Work will require some overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays as well as afterhours on-call duty.
