Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform manual and semi-skilled labor in the installation and maintenance of traffic control signs and/or pavement markings. Position incumbents spend a majority of their time performing labor-intensive duties; once proficient at these duties, incumbents are trained on the skilled aspects of the job, including performing traffic control sign and striping layout, the rules and guidelines governing traffic control signs and striping, and the operation of striping and sign construction equipment.  Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either the Street Striping subdivision or the Signing subdivision and perform the duties associated with that subdivision; however, all position incumbents are cross-trained on the duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed.  Primary work responsibilities may include: preparing road surfaces for painting; setting up and tearing down barricades and safety cones; assisting in the installation and revitalization of traffic control pavement markings; assisting in the installation, removal, replacement, and maintenance of street and traffic control signs; operating, as training allows, center line and hand striping machines, thermoplastic machines and melting kettles, cold laid plastic machines, bituminous machines, and core hole drills; assisting in the construction of street and traffic control signs; and performing additional duties in service to the department. Incumbents work on crews ranging from two to six workers and receive onsite direction from Traffic Maintenance Worker IIs and IIIs.  Position incumbents are supervised by a Traffic Maintenance Supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and six months of experience installing striping, installing raised pavement markers, installing traffic signs, and/or manufacturing street, traffic regulator, construction, and portable signs.

NOTE:  Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

  

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record. 

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one day in order to assist with paint striping and sign operations. Physical ability to stoop, crouch, bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operation and maintenance, loading or unloading equipment, and preparing surfaces for striping and signing operations. Physical ability to lift, carry, pull, and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Physical ability to lift, carry, pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance. Physical ability to frequently climb into and out of the bed of truck in order to secure tools or materials, install or remove sign posts, and clean road signs. Physical ability to lift and strike a sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand-eye coordination and physical strength. 

WORK CONDITIONS: Work performed involves a moderate to extensive amount of manual labor.  Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning.  Work includes exposure to strong fumes from solvents, paints, and other chemicals. Work involves frequent use of metal, glass, bituminous, and other materials which may cause frequent cuts, abrasions, and bruises.  Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to: in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at various rates of speed; in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants; and exposure to ants, bees, insects, and other local wildlife. Work requires some extended work hours, overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.
